On the rugged slopes of Mendoza, Argentina, OF Studio has completed a striking concrete residence that seems to grow directly from the earth. Known as Brutal Honesty, the 571-square-metre home embraces the drama of its canyon-edge setting, combining raw materiality with a deep respect for the landscape.
Architecture Shaped by the Mountain
Designed over six years, the house follows the contours of the terrain, its earth-toned retaining walls rising like abstract rock formations. These splaying structures define the home’s bold geometry while shielding it from the harsh southern exposure of the canyon. “The house emerges naturally from the terrain, shaping a landscape that coexists with its surroundings,” says co-founder Sebastián Andia, who leads OF Studio alongside Valentina Cerrone.
The home is arranged in three stacked layers: a basement carved into the hillside, a partially embedded ground floor, and an upper level that appears to rise free from the earth. Together, these levels create a dialogue between shelter and exposure, intimacy and vastness.

Spaces That Connect People and Place
At its heart lies the kitchen, branching out into communal living and dining areas that extend towards panoramic terraces. Rounded edges soften the brutalist structure, guiding movement toward expansive views of the Andean desert mountains. A playroom terrace offers a safe outdoor zone for children, while the rooftop plateau opens to recreation and relaxation areas surrounded by untouched landscape.

Delicate structural rods support rounded awnings that shade the terraces, adding refinement to the otherwise monolithic form. These gestures balance solidity with lightness, anchoring the home while keeping it open to the sky.

Material Honesty and Environmental Performance
Exposed concrete dominates the structure, chosen both for its resonance with local building traditions and its ability to echo the tones of the surrounding earth. This material honesty grounds the architecture in place, reflecting the studio’s philosophy of building with sincerity and restraint.
Beyond aesthetics, the design incorporates passive and active sustainability strategies: natural ventilation, shading, thermal insulation, solar panels, solar heaters, and a greywater recycling system. Together, they reduce the home’s environmental impact while supporting year-round comfort.

For the clients, the home’s success lies in its ability to preserve sweeping views while ensuring privacy and intimacy. “The project is about creating spaces that feel sincere, connect people, and let you experience the environment as part of everyday life,” says Andia.
In the end, Brutal Honesty is less a building than a continuation of the mountain itself - an architecture that neither conceals nor embellishes, but reveals. With its raw yet thoughtful design, it is a testament to how contemporary homes can engage with the earth as both foundation and inspiration.
