Project Info

Project Name: The Shuttle

Location: Bhubaneswar, Odisha, India

Architect: Studio Archohm

Client: Dalmia Cement

In the heart of Bhubaneswar, Odisha, a striking new architectural landmark has emerged, capturing both the spirit of sport and the imagination of the city’s residents. The Shuttle - a high-performance badminton centre shaped evocatively like a shuttlecock - represents an ambitious fusion of architectural ingenuity and sporting ambition, setting a new benchmark for India’s sports infrastructure.

Designed by Indian practice Studio Archohm, this iconic facility breaks away from conventional sports architecture by embracing the symbolic geometry of a shuttlecock’s cork base. The inverted hemispherical form isn’t just stylistic, its aerodynamic profile and structural ambition make it a distinctive sculptural presence at the Kalinga Stadium complex, one of the city’s major urban junctions.

The inverted hemispherical mass of The Shuttle abstracts the cork base

At its core, The Shuttle is a world-class badminton academy housing eight regulation courts configured in deep contrast ‘dark boxes’ that optimize lighting and player focus - a design choice rooted in athletic performance needs. Surrounding these courts are complementary facilities including lecture theatres, classrooms, dormitories, coach rooms, and a gym, vertically stacked to maximize the compact site footprint.

A curved terrazzo corridor in vivid orange guides athletes through recovery and support spaces, where glass-enclosed rooms, indoor planting, and soft daylight create a calm counterpoint

While its interior functions speak to its role as a centre of excellence for athletes, the building’s exterior engages with the city on a public level. The ground floor is activated with café spaces, sports shops, and transparent commercial zones that reduce the substantial form’s visual mass and draw footfall into the facility. The surrounding landscape unfolds into a shaded 500-seat spectator gallery and amphitheatres, making the centre a social node as much as an elite training hub.

Warm sandstone terraces, reflecting pools, and planted edges soften the transition between civic plaza and high-performance sports facility

Practical expression meets symbolic gesture in the building’s materials and lighting strategy. Concrete insulation counters Bhubaneswar’s heat and cyclonic weather conditions, while a custom lighting scheme transforms the structure after dark into a glowing beacon that visually mimics the feathers of a shuttlecock, celebrating the game it houses.

Glowing at dusk, The Shuttle transforms from a high-performance sports facility into a luminous architectural icon

The Shuttle isn’t merely an addition to the city’s sports facilities, it is designed to contribute to the cultural and economic identity of Bhubaneswar itself, demonstrating how bold architectural thinking can elevate a sporting facility into a landmark with civic presence.
