ANACAPA Transforms Historic State Street Landmark Into Drift Santa Barbara Boutique Hotel

At the heart of downtown Santa Barbara, a century-old building on 524 State Street has been given a new life. Once a 20th-century hotel, later a long-time home to the Church of Scientology, and even one of the rare survivors of the devastating 1925 Santa Barbara earthquake, the landmark has now been transformed by local design studio ANACAPA into Drift Santa Barbara - a 45-key boutique hotel that bridges the city’s layered past with a bold, modern hospitality experience.

A Historic Framework, Reimagined

Santa Barbara’s architectural identity has always been defined by its Mediterranean-style facades and historic charm. ANACAPA chose to preserve and restore these exterior elements while reinventing the interiors with an unexpected design language. Rather than replicating tradition, the team leaned into contrast: deep black walls, raw concrete surfaces, and warm white oak accents create a youthful, industrial feel that both surprises and welcomes guests.

Structural work was essential to prepare the building for its new role. Masonry walls were reinforced with rebar, shotcrete, and steel frames, ensuring safety while honoring the original framework. Salvageable materials were thoughtfully reused - the original wood framing, for example, was repurposed into feature walls in the penthouse and integrated into the design behind guestroom headboards, infusing the interiors with a sense of continuity and authenticity.

Compact Rooms, Smart Design

Given the building’s restricted downtown footprint, guest rooms were designed to balance comfort with efficiency. Each room maximizes space through clever solutions: alcoves beneath the bedframes allow discreet luggage storage, while glass-corner showers expand sightlines and make the compact layouts feel more generous. The result is an atmosphere that is both cozy and contemporary - tailored for the modern traveler seeking more than standard luxury.

A New Social Hub on State Street

Beyond the guestrooms, Drift Santa Barbara embraces its role as a community connector. The first floor dissolves barriers between the coffee shop and bar, encouraging locals and visitors to mingle within an open, flowing environment. Garage doors fold back toward the pedestrian promenade, blurring boundaries between indoors and outdoors and drawing in the curious with a sense of intrigue.
