In a historic quarter of Tianjin known for its red-brick Italianate architecture, the Tianjin Zhongshuge bookstore emerges not as a mere retail outlet but as a nuanced architectural gesture. X+Living’s approach was rooted in respect for context and craft, seeking to re-weave a modern building back into the fabric of its classical surroundings. By using brick and steel as primary materials, the design evokes both tradition and innovation.

The façade draws directly on the red brick typology of the district. Yet rather than replicating, X+Living introduces gaps and vertical cuts in the brickwork—drawing inspiration from the structure of blinds—to allow threads of light and shadow to filter through. This shifting surface transforms the material from heavy and opaque to porous and dynamic. The result is an architecture that breathes. Inside, the layering continues: a deep blue steel plate arcs through three levels, referencing Tianjin’s port city identity and the movement of ideas across the sea.
