The Architecture of Alchemy
The genius of the Salt Salon lies in its high-contrast layering. The existing structure—a heavy, windowless brick storehouse formerly used for maritime logistics—has been left largely untouched on the exterior. Its weathered, soot-stained facade gives no hint of the transformation within. Crossing the threshold, however, is an act of teleportation.

Unknown Works has lined the interior perimeter with a self-supporting wall system made of compressed salt blocks. These translucent bricks, backlit by a programmable LED circadian lighting system, act as a climatic and atmospheric filter. The salt naturally regulates the humidity of the room, creating a crisp, sterile microclimate that is ideal for both hair treatments and respiratory wellness (halotherapy).
The functional island is treated as a monolithic sculpture, crafted entirely from raw stainless steel
Visually, the effect is otherworldly. The jagged, crystalline texture of the salt diffuses the artificial light, bathing the space in a soft, peach-to-azure gradient that shifts with the time of day. The heavy Victorian brickwork is hidden behind this glowing veil, suggesting that the building has been crystallized from the inside out.

A Futuristic Laboratory
Contrasting the organic texture of the salt walls is a series of hyper-modern interventions made from brushed stainless steel. The cutting stations are not merely chairs and mirrors; they are floating pods suspended from a steel grid ceiling. This ceiling grid creates a lowered datum line, creating intimacy within the cavernous height of the storehouse while hiding the mechanical services above.

The floor is a continuous pour of white resin, slick and seamless, reinforcing the laboratory aesthetic. It reflects the glowing walls, blurring the boundary between floor and vertical surface, causing the occupants to feel as though they are floating within a cloud of saline mist.
Unknown Works also introduced a "sensory washroom"—a separate acoustic zone within the salon. Here, the salt blocks are left unlit and raw, and the soundscape is dampened to near silence. It is a moment of absolute sensory deprivation before the styling begins, a reset button for the urban mind.

Material Innovation as Sustainability
Beyond the visual spectacle, the Salt Salon is a serious investigation into sustainable materiality. The salt blocks were fabricated using waste products from the local desalination industry, turning an industrial byproduct into a luxury finish. Furthermore, at the end of the salon's lifespan, the interior can be dissolved and returned to the ocean without leaving a trace of landfill.

By pairing the history of the site with a material that is both ancient and radically applied, they have created a space that feels timeless.
