Layered thresholds connect dining and living through framed timber portals
Located in Los Angeles, Moon Canyon House is an interior renovation by NoNo Studio that transforms a private residence into a sculptural environment rooted in material sensitivity and atmospheric design. Rather than relying on visual excess, the project focuses on how space feels, how light travels, and how surfaces respond to everyday use. The result is an interior that evokes geological formations while remaining deeply human in scale and function.

Exposed timber structure frames living space with sculptural ceiling geometry
The design concept draws inspiration from natural erosion and the slow formation of landscapes. Curved walls, softened edges, and continuous surfaces create a sense of flow throughout the home. Circulation feels intuitive, as spaces gently lead into one another without abrupt transitions. This approach allows the interior to unfold gradually, encouraging slower movement and deeper engagement with the surroundings.

Vaulted kitchen features custom oak joinery beneath skylight and beams
Material selection plays a central role in defining the identity of Moon Canyon House. Plaster finishes with subtle tonal variation cover walls and ceilings, giving the interior a tactile, almost hand shaped quality. These surfaces interact with light throughout the day, shifting in warmth and depth as sunlight moves across the rooms. Stone, wood, and muted textiles complement the plaster, reinforcing a palette that feels grounded and timeless.

Timber-clad workspace alcove carves intimate study nook from larger volume
Natural light is treated as a design element rather than a background condition. Openings are carefully positioned to frame views and introduce soft illumination that enhances the texture of the surfaces. Instead of dramatic contrasts, the lighting strategy favors gradual transitions between light and shadow. This creates an atmosphere of calm continuity, where each room maintains a distinct mood while remaining connected to the whole.

Minimal bedroom emphasizes natural light, timber detailing, and spatial calm
Furniture and built in elements are integrated seamlessly into the architecture. Seating, shelving, and storage are often custom designed to follow the curves and proportions of the space. This integration reduces visual clutter and strengthens the sculptural character of the interior. Objects appear intentional and restrained, allowing materials and form to take precedence over decoration.

Woven cane wardrobes frame ensuite entry, maintaining material warmth throughout
The kitchen and living areas exemplify NoNo Studio’s approach to functional minimalism. Practical requirements are met through thoughtful detailing rather than overt expression. Surfaces are smooth and uninterrupted, while joints and transitions are carefully resolved. This attention to detail ensures that the space supports daily life without compromising its conceptual clarity.

Skylight floods bathing niche with soft, diffused natural overhead light
Bedrooms and private areas continue the same language but with a softer, more intimate tone. Textiles add warmth, while lighting becomes more subdued. These spaces feel protective and inward looking, reinforcing the idea of the home as a retreat from the city outside. Despite the consistency in materials, each area offers a slightly different spatial experience.

Moon Canyon House reflects a broader shift in contemporary interior architecture toward sensory driven design. Instead of prioritizing trends or visual statements, the project emphasizes longevity, comfort, and emotional resonance. By drawing from natural processes and material honesty, NoNo Studio creates an interior that feels both contemporary and enduring.
