Frameless glass façade blends library with city at dusk
The concept of the library has historically been defined by the labyrinth: rows of shelves, hushed corridors, and the smell of old paper. In the Tongzhou District of Beijing, Snøhetta has dismantled this archetype. Working with local partner ECADI, they have delivered the Beijing City Library, a project that reimagines the library not as a warehouse for books, but as a boundless, transparent landscape for the digital age.

Ginkgo-inspired canopy creates a rhythmic, solar-integrated roofscape
The visual identity of the building is defined by a singular, sweeping gesture: the creation of an artificial forest. The main volume is devoid of traditional walls or partitions. Instead, the vast roof is supported by dozens of soaring columns that mimic the fan-like spread of the ginkgo tree, a species native to China. These "trees" are not merely decorative. They are the technological engines of the building. Each column conceals the distribution of climate control, lighting, and acoustic dampening, allowing the massive open space to remain comfortable and quiet despite its cathedral-like scale.

"Artificial forest" columns support a boundless, open learning landscape
Beneath this canopy lies "The Valley." Snøhetta has sculpted the ground floor into a terraced topography of hills and amphitheatres. This manipulation of the floor plate creates distinct zones for reading and gathering without the need for dividers. Visitors act as hikers in this landscape, finding their own corners on the stepped platforms. It prioritizes the human desire for connection, turning the solitary act of reading into a communal experience.

The project’s most audacious engineering feat is its skin. The library is wrapped in the world’s largest load-bearing glass façade. Rising up to 16 meters, these massive panels contain no mullions or visible framing. The result is a dissolution of the boundary between the interior knowledge-scape and the exterior parkland. The glass is so clear and the span so high that the roof appears to float, untethered to the ground. This transparency serves a civic function, putting the pursuit of knowledge on public display and inviting the city inside.

Tree-like columns conceal tech in the vast, cathedral-like volume
Sustainability is woven into the "ginkgo" logic. The roof is covered in photovoltaic (BIPV) elements that replace conventional roofing materials, turning the building’s large footprint into a renewable energy generator. The overhangs of the roof reduce solar gain, while the modular nature of the columns allowed for pre-fabrication, reducing construction waste.

Stepped terraces transform reading into a communal, civic experience
By combining advanced glass engineering with an ancient botanical metaphor, Snøhetta has created a new icon for Beijing. The library asserts that in a digital world, physical spaces for learning must offer something the screen cannot: grandeur, community, and the awe of standing beneath a canopy of wisdom.
