Set within a compact 280-square-metre site in Melbourne, The House of Light by Jolson emerges as a serene meditation on materiality, illumination, and the emotional depth of home. Designed as a four-level urban sanctuary, the residence transforms a constrained block into a layered, tranquil world shaped by crafted surfaces, curated art, and a choreography of light.

From the street, the house presents a bold, sculptural façade composed of 26,000 handmade bricks. Each brick carries subtle variations in tone and texture, resulting in a façade that appears woven rather than constructed. The carefully blended palette allows the exterior to shift with the sun, creating a dynamic interplay of light and shadow across the day. A narrow vertical slit punctures this solid masonry, offering a quiet preview of the lush greenery inside.

Crossing the brick-lined entrance, visitors move from the density of the city into a calm, garden-framed forecourt. Climbing plants soften the strong masonry forms and introduce a sense of life and movement, marking a transition from urban edge to introspective retreat. This contrast becomes the architectural narrative: grounding on the outside, and gently unfolding within.

At the heart of the home is a sculpted central staircase that rises through all levels. Formed with polished plaster and stone, the stair sits beneath a series of skylights that serve as the primary source of natural illumination. This vertical void becomes the emotional spine of the home, drawing daylight deep into the structure and encouraging upward and downward visual connections. Suspended within the void is a handcrafted chandelier by Lindsey Adelman, its glass forms flecked with gold, adding a delicate counterpoint to the home’s grounded material palette.

Jolson’s selection of materials furthers this sense of crafted calm. Turkish limestone appears throughout the interior—sometimes honed, sometimes bush-hammered, sometimes carved—to subtly define different spatial experiences. Bronze accents trace the home’s edges, lining joinery, handrails, and custom bookcases, adding warmth and refinement. These details, small yet deeply intentional, demonstrate a commitment to craft that resonates from room to room.

Below ground, a dedicated wellness suite anchors the home with a sense of restoration. Clad in textured limestone and featuring a meditation room, infrared sauna, and a serene sunken courtyard, this lower level is a space for stillness. Soft daylight filters into the courtyard from above, illuminating ferns and vertical planting that transform the underground zone into a hidden oasis. This area is not simply an amenity; it is the emotional core of the home.

Throughout the residence, light is not merely admitted—it is shaped. Skylights, voids, and garden pockets guide the sun into unexpected places, animating curved plaster walls and stone surfaces with subtle shifts of brightness. Landscape plays a critical role in softening the architecture. Vertical planting climbs the brick façade, terraces bloom with greenery, and internal courtyards allow light and nature to mingle with crafted surfaces. Furniture and art have been curated with equal care. Collaborating with art consultant Swee Lim, Jolson curated a collection of artworks and custom furniture pieces that blend seamlessly with the architecture, enhancing the sensory richness of the interiors.

Functionally, the home balances intimacy and openness. The vertical arrangement allows for clear zoning, yet the stair void ensures visual and emotional continuity. Each level has its own character—social, contemplative, restorative—but all are united by the rhythm of natural light.

Through its sculpted materials, luminous voids, curated art, and layered landscape, the residence transcends its compact site to offer a deeply personal sanctuary—one that encourages reflection, stillness, and a renewed connection to light.
