Project Info

Project Name: MINISO LAND Guangzhou No.1 Store

Location: Guangzhou, China

Architect: X+Living

Client: MINISO

In the age of algorithmic shopping and same-day delivery, physical retail faces an uncomfortable question: why should people still visit stores? The answer emerging from MINISO’s newest flagship in Guangzhou is surprisingly emotional. Rather than competing on efficiency alone, the brand has transformed shopping into spectacle, storytelling, and sensory escape.

Designed by X+Living, the new MINISO LAND Guangzhou No.1 Store reimagines the retail environment as a surreal “brand wonderland” where classical architecture, amusement-park fantasy, theatrical color, and pop culture collide in a highly immersive spatial narrative.

A Store Designed Like a Celebration

The project is built around a central concept: “A Never-ending Urban Celebration”. Rather than organizing the store through conventional retail zoning, the designers structured the experience like a theatrical journey. The two-story flagship unfolds as a progression between distinct emotional worlds - from the dreamlike serenity of the ground floor to the energetic creativity of the upper level.

At street level, visitors encounter what the designers call the “Garden of Eden Party”. Inspired by ancient Greek temples, the space uses colonnades, arches, and symmetrical layouts to create a sense of ritual and grandeur. Yet the classical references are intentionally disrupted by bursts of saturated color, oversized props, animated IP characters, and playful retail displays. The result feels less like a store and more like stepping into a theatrical set where mythology meets pop culture.

At the center of this fantasy sits a recurring symbol: the red apple. Reinterpreted from the biblical Eden narrative, it becomes a metaphor for curiosity, vitality, and discovery - values the brand associates with contemporary youth culture and emotional consumption.

The Architecture of Emotional Retail

One of the project’s most compelling achievements is how it dissolves the traditional tension between commerce and experience. Shelving systems are integrated into the architectural language itself, embedded within arches and temple-like structures so that products feel part of the narrative rather than isolated merchandise displays.

This reflects a broader shift happening across global retail design. Increasingly, flagship stores are no longer merely points of sale; they are immersive environments engineered to encourage exploration, lingering, photography, and emotional connection. As retail analysts have observed, today’s consumers, especially younger audiences, are drawn to spaces that feel experiential and socially shareable.

MINISO LAND embraces this shift completely. Instead of minimalist restraint, the design leans unapologetically into maximalism. Bright colors spill across surfaces like paint from an artist’s palette. Spatial sequences unfold cinematically. Every corner appears staged for discovery.

The architecture does not ask visitors to simply shop. It asks them to wander.

Music, Machinery, and Controlled Chaos

If the first floor evokes paradise, the second floor becomes a factory of imagination.

Named “Ode to Joy”, the upper level takes music as its conceptual framework. Here, the design language becomes more industrial and kinetic. Display systems borrow forms from musical instruments, while metal rivets, mechanical arms, and storage units reference factory production lines.

The designers use rhythm as both metaphor and organizational tool. Long sightlines, layered perspectives, compressed volumes, and strategically framed openings create a constant sense of movement. Visitors catch glimpses of the next space before arriving, much like hearing fragments of melody before a chorus resolves. This orchestration transforms circulation into choreography. Customers do not move linearly through departments; they drift through changing emotional atmospheres.

The effect mirrors techniques previously explored by X+Living in other MINISO LAND locations, including the Shanghai flagship on Nanjing East Road, where the studio experimented with amusement-park imagery, cinematic montage, and immersive storytelling as tools for future retail environments.

Retail as Escapism

What makes the Guangzhou flagship particularly significant is not only its visual ambition, but its understanding of retail as emotional infrastructure.

In dense contemporary cities where daily life is increasingly digitized, accelerated, and transactional, spaces that offer escapism carry growing cultural value. The designers describe the store as “a gentle dream quietly overflowing from the crevices of daily life” - a temporary refuge from urban pressure.

This philosophy aligns closely with MINISO’s broader evolution. Originally known as a budget lifestyle retailer, the company has increasingly repositioned itself around IP collaborations, collectible culture, and immersive flagship experiences. Its MINISO LAND concept stores represent a strategic move toward “interest-driven consumption” where emotional engagement becomes as important as the products themselves.

In Guangzhou, that strategy reaches a new level of architectural expression. The store is no longer a neutral container for products. It becomes a world-building device that blurs the boundaries between retail, entertainment, exhibition, and fantasy. And perhaps that is the future of physical shopping: not simply buying things, but entering stories.
