Hainan is often romanticized as a tropical paradise of white sands and blue waters. However, beneath the surface lies a complex ecosystem defined by rapid growth and marine biodiversity. Aesop, a brand known for its rigorous reading of local context, has tapped into this biological rhythm for its new store in Sanya. The design team has moved beyond the traditional palette of stone and timber. They have ventured into the realm of bio-futurism. The store is not built in the traditional sense. It feels cultivated.

The defining element of the space is its skin. The walls are clad in a material derived from algae. This is a radical departure from the extractive processes of quarrying marble or felling trees. The designers utilized a biopolymer composite made from ground algae powder. This substance is molded into panels that possess a unique tactile quality. They are smooth yet organic. They feel cool to the touch like polished coral. The color is not applied with paint. It is intrinsic to the material itself. The muted, mossy green hues speak directly to the marine vegetation found off the coast.
