Where Architecture Becomes Literature

In the historic city of Huai’an, known for its literary legacy and water-town charm, Zhongshuge emerges as a new cultural landmark. Designed by X+Living, the space encapsulates the studio’s signature approach—where narrative, symbolism, and emotion converge through spatial design. Rather than constructing a mere retail venue, the architects envisioned a poetic environment where the architecture itself “reads” like a story.

Curved shelves spiral toward infinity, embodying the endless journey of knowledge

The design captures the soul of Huai’an through a spatial rhythm that flows like ink across paper. Each curve and reflection echoes the city’s waterways and poetic traditions, inviting visitors to wander, linger, and lose themselves in a continuous dialogue between culture and contemporary form.

A Dance of Light, Reflection, and Form

Upon entering, the visitor is immediately enveloped by light and symmetry. Vaulted ceilings arch overhead, mirrored floors dissolve the boundaries of perception, and infinite reflections create a surreal visual depth. The sensation is both expansive and intimate—a carefully balanced illusion that encourages stillness and focus amid the sensory play.

A celestial core where books orbit like planets around the mind’s universe

X+Living’s use of reflection is not mere spectacle but emotional architecture. By visually extending space, mirrors invite self-awareness and contemplation. The interplay of light and darkness turns every step into a cinematic moment, each reflection a metaphor for the layered relationship between knowledge and identity.

Designing a City of Books

The spatial organization unfolds like an urban map. Broad corridors function as thoroughfares guiding visitors through “districts” of knowledge, while alcoves and arches create intimate “courtyards” for private reading. Towering shelves rise like city walls, drawing the eye upward and amplifying the feeling of awe.

In contrast, the children’s zone bursts into a vibrant landscape of color and form—its playful shapes encourage exploration and curiosity. Here, design acts as pedagogy, showing how space can inspire learning and imagination simultaneously.

Material Poetry and Symbolism

The palette combines natural wood, polished stone, and reflective glass to evoke both warmth and clarity. These elements symbolize the coexistence of tradition and modernity, much like the books themselves—a bridge between memory and innovation. The continuous arch motif references the city’s ancient bridges, while the mirrored ceiling extends them into eternity, as if the architecture itself were dreaming.

Every design decision, from the lighting to the curvature of the shelves, contributes to a harmonious visual language that merges calmness with curiosity. The result is an environment that feels alive—subtly shifting with each visitor’s movement, mood, and gaze.

A Sanctuary for the Imagination

Beyond its architectural sophistication, Huai’an Zhongshuge offers something deeply human: stillness. In an era dominated by digital noise, the space invites pause, reflection, and reconnection. Reading here becomes both a personal and spatial experience—a quiet act magnified by the vastness of the design.

This is not simply a bookstore, but a sanctuary where architecture, culture, and emotion converge. Through its poetic use of form and reflection, Zhongshuge transforms the everyday act of browsing into a journey inward—a rediscovery of wonder in the language of space.
