In the sun-scorched landscape of Saudi Arabia’s Red Sea coast, a structure is rising that redefines the limits of human ambition. The Jeddah Tower, formerly known as the Kingdom Tower, is poised to become the world’s first kilometer-high skyscraper. Far more than a record-breaking feat, it represents a bold vision: the creation of a vertical city that merges architecture, engineering, and urban planning into one singular, sky-piercing form.

The Next Frontier of Super-Tall Architecture

Designed by Adrian Smith + Gordon Gill Architecture, the Jeddah Tower builds on lessons learned from previous supertalls, most notably the Burj Khalifa in Dubai. But while the Burj Khalifa stood as a symbol of architectural innovation in the 21st century, Jeddah Tower seeks to push even further, transcending height to become a living ecosystem stacked vertically.

With a planned height of 1,000 meters (3,280 feet) and 252 floors, the tower will dwarf every other building on earth. Its tapering, three-petal form is more than a stylistic choice - it’s a response to the intense wind forces and environmental challenges that come with building at such an extraordinary scale. Each “petal” narrows as the tower ascends, reducing wind loads while creating a graceful, organic silhouette inspired by desert plants.

A Mixed-Use Urban Ecosystem

The tower is not merely a building, but a self-contained vertical city.

Inside, a dynamic mix of luxury residences, office spaces, a five-star hotel, and public observation decks will come together to form a complete, interconnected community. Among its highlights is the world’s highest observation deck, offering breathtaking views of Jeddah, the Red Sea, and beyond.

Elevating this experience - literally - are 59 elevators, including five double-decker lifts, carefully engineered to balance speed and passenger comfort. Vertical circulation is broken into segments with sky lobbies, allowing residents and visitors to move efficiently through the massive structure without discomfort from rapid altitude changes.

Engineering the Impossible

Building a kilometer-high tower presents challenges at a scale few have ever faced. The desert environment offers unstable soil conditions, requiring a foundation of massive piles reaching 360 feet deep. This subterranean work is as monumental as the structure above, anchoring the tower securely in a region prone to extreme temperatures and seismic activity.

The structure itself demands unprecedented amounts of concrete and steel - roughly 80,000 tons of steel will be used, along with a high-performance glass façade engineered to reduce solar heat gain in Jeddah’s harsh climate. Every detail, from façade design to elevator speed, has been meticulously planned to balance performance, efficiency, and sustainability.

The Tower as a Cultural Statement

Jeddah Tower is more than an engineering achievement; it’s a national symbol.

As the centerpiece of the broader Jeddah Economic City development, it embodies Saudi Arabia’s Vision 2030 - a strategic plan to diversify the economy beyond oil and position the nation as a global hub for commerce, tourism, and innovation.

By rising literally and figuratively above the desert, the tower sends a clear message: Saudi Arabia is looking upward and forward, staking its claim as a leader in modern urbanism and architectural progress.

The journey to its completion has been anything but simple, with construction halts, economic shifts, and a global pandemic slowing progress. Yet, like the tower itself, the project has proven resilient - continuing to rise, inch by inch, toward the sky.
