Yet in the contemporary era, the medium of light is no longer confined to fixtures or sources alone; it is sculpted, filtered, and transformed through the materials it touches. From translucent stone and woven metal mesh to smart glass and bio-resins, today’s designers are rediscovering light as a tactile substance - one that can be shaped as deliberately as wood or concrete.
The Dialogue Between Material and Light
Every material interacts with light in its own way: some absorb, others reflect or transmit, and increasingly many respond. Traditional categories - stone, metal, glass - are being reinterpreted. Now stone glows from within, metal weaves diffuse daylight like fabric, and glass becomes a dynamic membrane that reacts to its environment. These innovations mean that surfaces are no longer passive backdrops; they are active collaborators with light, shaping not just visibility but experience.
A compelling recent example: the Perelman Performing Arts Center in New York (designed by REX Architecture) uses thin slabs of Portuguese marble laminated between glass to create a façade that during the day reads as a solid stone monolith, and by night glows softly from within.

Another is the Sinsa S8 commercial-building in Seoul by ArchiWorkshop, which employs a mesh membrane façade that diffuses light and visually connects interior and exterior through a semi-translucent veil.

These projects reveal that surfaces are now designed as luminous instruments - not just for cover, but for experience.
Translucent Stone: Reinterpreting Solidity
One of the most striking shifts is how stone - long associated with mass, permanence, and opacity - is being transformed into a medium of light. Translucent stone panels, often very thin marble or onyx, are now being laminated with glass or resin to allow daylight to pass through or to be internally back-lit.
In the Perelman Performing Arts Center, nearly 5,000 insulated glass units (IGUs) containing ½-inch (≈12 mm) translucent marble slabs enable daylight to filter through, while at night the same slabs are lit from within, causing the structure to glow like a lantern. The effect is dual: by day a dignified stone box, by night a luminous stage.

The design lesson: when stone becomes light-transmitting, it redefines scale and drama. It invites architecture to be less about mass and more about presence, offering ethereal solidity rather than heavy weight. Woven Metal Mesh: Industrial Warmth
Metal has long been used as a reflective or protective surface, but in the latest buildings it is being engineered into fine meshes, lattices and expanded metal façades that behave more like textiles than armour. These woven or perforated metal surfaces modulate light, diffusing daylight, casting subtle shadows, and offering views while controlling glare.
For example, the In‑between Pavilion (Nantou) by Trace Architecture Office in Shenzhen uses a semi-translucent metal mesh façade that blurs inside and outside and animates light and movement across the surface. Meanwhile, the built home Woven House by Giles Miller Studio in Kent (UK) features an intricate steel lattice façade, inviting greenery to weave through and light to dance across.

The design takeaway: mesh and lattice surfaces offer an interplay of transparency and enclosure. Light filters through them, creating patterns and rhythms that change with time and weather. They are especially potent where you want architecture to feel breathable, kinetic, and responsive without being overtly high-tech.
Smart Glass: The Intelligent Interface
If stone turns luminous and metal weaves light, glass is becoming intelligent. Smart glass systems - electrochromic glazing, dynamic tinting, façades that adapt to sun, weather or occupancy - are redefining how natural light is admitted and controlled. In these systems, the surface itself becomes a responsive filter.
Take the Scott Sports Headquarters building in Givisiez, Switzerland, designed by Itten + Brechbühl. The ground floor uses SageGlass® electrochromic glazing that tints in response to light intensity, while the upper skin includes micro-perforated aluminum.
The result: a façade that controls glare, admits daylight, maintains transparency and conserves energy - all via its surface.

Design insight: Smart glazing shifts the role of the window from passive to active. When integrated with sensors and building systems, the surface becomes participatory - controlling light, heat, privacy, and view. Architects can use this to create façades that feel alive, adaptive, and tuned to human comfort.

Our studio dialogues with surfaces need to be about emotional layering: texture, tone, translucency, shadow. The careful use of these materials invites tactility, invites curiosity, invites pause. Architects and interior designers can ask: How does this surface make someone feel at dusk? At dawn? How does it age? How does it mediate between day and night, inside and out?
Toward a Luminous Future
As sustainability, digitalisation and material innovation continue to evolve, the palette of light-responsive surfaces will only expand. We can expect bio-composite resins that glow softly, fiber-optic textiles embedded into wall systems, 3D printed panels that refract light intentionally, and façades that shift visually like skins. The key is this: when surfaces become instruments of light, architecture becomes more than form, it becomes atmosphere.
For practitioners, the guideline is simple: think about the surface as a participant in light. Explore the interplay of depth, translucency, pattern and movement. Choose materials not just for texture or durability, but for how they mediate light, shadow and space.
In the age of material-light, the wall will no longer say “Here is structure.” It will say: “Here is ambience. Here is transition. Here is the pause between day and night.” And in that pause, architecture finds its glow.
