In the heart of Rioja Alavesa, where winemaking tradition spans centuries, the Legacy of Bodegas Faustino project by Foster + Partners is more than an expansion; it is an architectural symphony that recalibrates the relationship between industrial production and the natural landscape from which it is born. Commissioned by the fourth generation of the Martínez Zabala Family, the design proves that a reverence for heritage and a commitment to radical sustainability can seamlessly converge in modern industrial architecture.

The project's narrative begins with a critical shift in the visitor journey. Previously, the experience may have commenced abruptly at the parking lot. Now, Foster + Partners has relocated the main entrance to the northern edge, establishing a gentle, winding path that guides visitors directly through the vineyards. This subtle yet powerful re-routing ensures the first impression is the landscape itself—a deliberate, slow immersion that merges nature, culture, and architecture before the visitor even reaches the building.

The new Visitor Center is the architectural centerpiece, drawing immediate inspiration from the winery’s rich industrial past. The roof is conceived as a barrel vault, nodding to traditional wine cellars and the industrial heritage. However, instead of heavy masonry, this vault is realized using a lightweight structure of timber arches. This choice of material and form is highly functional: the anti-funicular profile maximizes structural efficiency with minimal material, creating a magnificent column-free interior that offers maximum flexibility for events and showcases.
The material selection is a core tenet of the design’s ecological statement. The building adopts an earthy, natural palette using locally sourced timber, including Larch from the Basque Country, Oak, Pine, and Cedar. This commitment ensures the structure blends harmoniously into the Rioja terroir, particularly when the vineyard leaves turn the hillsides vibrant red in autumn. Beyond aesthetics, these natural materials foster a biophilic environment, enhancing the well-being of visitors and staff by strengthening the sensory connection to nature.

Critically, Faustino sets a new bar for environmental performance. The project is proudly designated a "Planet 1.0" building—an ambitious standard indicating that the building’s total carbon emissions are designed to be easily absorbed by the Earth's green cover. Moreover, the building is Energy Plus: photovoltaic panels integrated into the roof produce approximately 70% more energy than the Visitor Center requires for its operations, with the surplus channeled to the existing production facilities, significantly boosting the sustainability profile of the entire campus. Passive design strategies reinforce this: deep cantilevered eaves minimize direct solar gain, while a central clerestory (skylight) and integrated glazing flood the column-free hall with modulated natural light, drastically reducing the need for artificial lighting.
