The polycarbonate skin transforms the building into a glowing industrial lantern
Seongsu-dong is not a place for polished perfection. Known as the "Brooklyn of Seoul," this district is defined by the hum of machinery, the smell of red brick, and the legacy of shoe factories. For the new H&M Seongsu, the design studio SKYnoa chose not to fight this context but to inhale it. The result is a retail space that feels less like a finished boutique and more like a curated construction site, a space that captures the raw energy of creation.
Raw concrete and art merge the store with Seongsu’s gritty creative context
The architectural strategy is rooted in "industrial honesty." Instead of concealing the building’s skeleton behind drywall and glossy veneers, SKYnoa has stripped the structure to its bare essentials. The space operates on the aesthetic of the "behind-the-scenes." Steel scaffolding, typically used as a temporary support mechanism, is elevated here to become the primary architectural language. It forms the racks, the shelves, and the spatial dividers. This choice transforms the static nature of retail into something modular and mutable. The store feels as though it could be dismantled and reassembled in a new form tomorrow, mirroring the fast-paced, cyclical nature of the fashion industry itself.
The translucent facade acts as a veil, blurring the line between street and commerce
Light plays a critical, almost cinematic role in softening this industrial grit. The architects utilized polycarbonate sheeting to wrap portions of the facade and interior partitions. This material acts as a luminous veil. It blurs the chaotic streetscape of Seongsu into a soft wash of color and movement. By day, the interior is bathed in a diffuse, milky glow that flatters the garments. By night, the building transforms into a glowing lantern, a beacon of modern commerce set against the dark, heavy masonry of the neighborhood.

The contrast between hard and soft defines the atmospheric tension of the project. The rigid, cold lines of the steel and concrete are constantly interrupted by the fluidity of textiles. Curtains flow from the ceiling to the floor, carving out changing rooms and intimate display zones. This juxtaposition highlights the product itself. The clothes are not just merchandise; they are the softening agents in a hard shell, the colorful characters on a brutalist stage.

SKYnoa also prioritized a connection to nature within this dense urban fabric. A sunken garden and strategically placed greenery introduce organic chaos to the disciplined grid of the scaffolding. These pockets of life provide relief and pause. They remind the visitor that even in a space dedicated to production and consumption, there is room for slow growth and breath.

H&M Seongsu is a bold rejection of the traditional flagship model. It does not strive for timeless luxury but embraces the beauty of the ephemeral. It is a space that celebrates the process of making, the logic of assembly, and the vibrant, unfinished narrative of Seoul’s most dynamic district. SKYnoa has proved that in the modern retail landscape, the most luxurious finish is sometimes no finish at all.
