In Tokyo, where beauty spaces are often wrapped in polished minimalism and pristine surfaces, Unravel Salon takes a radically different approach. Designed by Japanese studio Atelier Write, the new salon inhabits a former warehouse with an atmosphere that feels like an experimental creative studio - raw, unfinished, and deeply intentional.
Set within an industrial shell, the project embraces the imperfections of the existing structure rather than concealing them. Exposed concrete, visible steel elements, and traces of the building’s previous life remain fully present, allowing the space to retain a sense of memory and texture. Instead of erasing the warehouse’s roughness, Atelier Write transformed it into the defining feature of the salon’s identity.
The result is a space that challenges traditional ideas of luxury. Here, sophistication does not come from glossy finishes or excessive decoration, but from restraint, atmosphere, and material honesty.
Designing Through Subtraction
Rather than filling the interior with partitions and ornamental details, Atelier Write approached the project through a process of subtraction. Existing structural elements were preserved wherever possible, creating an open environment where light, shadow, and movement become part of the spatial experience.
The salon unfolds almost like a stage set. Styling areas, waiting zones, and circulation paths are loosely defined through lightweight interventions rather than fixed architectural boundaries. Curtains, suspended materials, and movable components soften the warehouse’s industrial character while maintaining visual openness.
This flexibility gives the salon a constantly shifting quality. Depending on where a visitor stands, the space alternates between intimacy and expansiveness - moments of quiet enclosure suddenly opening into larger communal areas.
The approach reflects a growing design movement in Tokyo that values adaptability and emotional atmosphere over rigid functionality. Instead of prescribing exactly how the space should be experienced, Atelier Write allows visitors to discover their own rhythm within it.
The Beauty of Raw Materials

Yet despite the industrial palette, the salon never feels cold. Soft fabrics, diffused lighting, and carefully balanced textures introduce warmth and tactility throughout the interior.
